This series of works, titled ‘on a roll’, evolved from an observation that the shape of a rolled up exercise mat echoes the rolled up parchment of Torah scrolls and rolled up paper in the studio. After many observational studies, these intimate yet expansive oil pastel drawings took shape. The practices of movement, Judaism and art overlap in this motif, bringing together the secular, the sacred, and different elements of Ali’s lived experience.
